This past Friday at the Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, there was an opening of an exhibition of "Dina Merrill and Friends," featuring the paintings of Dina Merrill, Ted Hartley, Virginia Burke, Lucy Cookson, Miriam Dougenis, Lynn Hanke, Bonnie Lowe, Anik Libby, Michelle Murphy, and Alic Connick Ryan.

Ms. Merrill became seriously interested in painting several years ago and her husband Ted Harley organized a painting group to meet in their home twice a week. They recruited the highly regarded East End artist Miriam Dougenis as teacher and an impressive group of painters were born. The Marcelle Gallery is located on 2411 Main Street in Bridgehampton. On a warm summer night in July, over six hundred individuals flocked to the edge of Newport Harbor to attend the IYRS Annual Summer Gala sponsored by Fidelity Investments and Jaguar. The first stop of the evening at the July 6 event: cocktails inside “Restoration Hall.” The cavernous 1903 building once powered the city with electricity. But today, this brick building with cathedral-tall windows has been repurposed to exert a power of a completely different kind: helping students to transform their lives by becoming craftsmen.

On every other day of the year, Restoration Hall is a place of industry, where IYRS students at this school of marine trades and technology learn their craft by restoring derelict wooden boats and turning these watercraft back into vessels with fair hulls and gleaming varnish. But on the night of the school’s Gala, guests such as Barbara van Beuren and Steve Glascock, Chuck and Jill Townsend and Luke Roosa, TED talk creator Richard Saul Wurman, Kathy and Pierre duPont Irving, Anne Fairfax and Richard Sammons, Laura Turner Seydel and Rutherford Seydel, Tricia and Jamie Hilton, and Kate and James Gubelmann joined event co-chairs Earl and  Elizabeth McMillen inside Restoration Hall to celebrate and support the school; guests mingled amidst stunning student work and perused an expansive gallery of silent auction items.
Restoration Hall, the student workshop, was transformed into a setting for the silent auction
After cocktails, guests such as IYRS Chairman Joe Dockery and Kristal Dockery,Molly and Guillaume de Ramel, Bill and Robin Hubbard, Posy and Charlie Dana, Andrea van Beuren and Roger Kass, Bill Vareika, Chas Miller and Birch Coffey, Deborah Hadley and Mark Seltzer, Dayton Carr, Donna Montgomery, Pieter and Nina Taselaar, and Holly Bannister and Doug Newhouse migrated with the crowd across the crushed-clamshell grounds of the waterfront campus for dinner in a cloud-white tent that towered over the surrounding buildings.

Auctioneer C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s conducted a spirited live auction. The item that received the most rigorous bidding was a painting by maritime artist and IYRS co-founder John Mecray of the 1885 Coronet, a 133-foot schooner yacht now being restored on the IYRS campus by Robert McNeil and his team at Coronet Restoration Partners. It is not surprising that the Coronet painting was so coveted: once this vessel is restored, this legendary craft will sail from IYRS as a rare example of a yacht that has survived since the Gilded Age.

Another coveted item was a student-restored Beetle Cat, a diminutive catboat whose design dates to 1921. These boats—one of which was raffled at the event—are used as a teaching tool for IYRS students; each June, at the end of term, a fleet of brightly colored Beetle Cats are returned to the water on graduation day.
Gala guests packed into Restoration Hall on the IYRS campus during the Annual Summer Gala, to enjoy cocktails amidst examples of students' boat- restoration work
After dinner, the main event of the evening began when Jimmy Buffett and his band walked onstage for a private concert for the IYRS guests. The dress code on the Gala invite was “St. Barths Chic”—and Buffett complied, kicking off his flip-flops to regale guests with classic tunes that almost everyone knew the words to.

IYRS teaches its students that building with their hands is the essence of creativity, productivity, human spirit, and even community.  The school was originally founded to revive an old-world skill set and teach individuals to restore classic wooden boats. But along the way, IYRS’s hands-on way of training helped the school to develop a whole new modern model of experiential education—a model that prepares deeply technical and ultra-talented craftspeople and technicians to work with a range of materials and develop hands-on skills that serve both industry and the individual. The outcome of this educational model is impressive: more than 85 percent of the school’s graduates are employed on or about the time they complete their programs.
Guests mingled amidst the event’s display of silent auction items
Event Co-Chairs Earl and Elizabeth McMillen of McMillen Yachts well remember this Rhode Island school when it was a fledgling concern. Now, with three programs—in Boatbuilding & Restoration, Composites Technology, and Marine Systems—IYRS has blossomed into a place that draws students from around the world who come to this Rhode Island school to change their livelihood and their lives.

As Earl McMillen said on Gala evening: “We have been delighted and honored to support IYRS over the past seventeen years…It is an educational institution which gives its students the ability to follow their dreams and pursue a career that satisfies them on all levels.”

Sponsors and guests at the IYRS Gala were also delighed to honor and support this Rhode Island school: by evening’s end, $885,000 had been raised for educational programs.
C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s—who has conducted some of the auction house’s most prestigious sales, including those of the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor—conducted the live auction
After gala-guests departed for home and lights under the big tent were extinguished, IYRS President Terry Nathan reflected on the success of the evening. “IYRS continues to build support for the extraordinary student outcomes and the school’s education model,” said Nathan. “At a time when the conversation in America is about training more people to make and build things, an IYRS education is preparing people for life-long careers of working and thinking through their hands.  It is a compelling and important story.”

This year’s IYRS gala attracted a strong lineup of sponsors. Joining title sponsors Fidelity Investments and Jaguar were: the Argo Group, Bacardi, BankNewport, Boat International, Condé Nast Publications, Pamela & Andrew Constantine, Bob Eichler, Friendship Yacht Company, Hess Corporation, The Hinckley Company, The Hilton Group at UBS, Dan MacDonald and Three Golden Apples, McMillen Yachts, Newport Harbor Corporation, Coronet Restoration Partners, Tradewinds Aviation, Vareika Fine Arts, Whitehawk LLC, and Wimco Private Villas.

In June 2007, Unik Ernest decided to utilize his birthday to give back. In lieu of gifts, he encouraged guests to dig into their pockets and donate towards a greater cause. This year marked his Edeyo Foundation’s 5th Anniversary and keeping with tradition, this birthday party for both Edeyo and Unik Ernest, carried the same ritual. The evening raised much-needed funds for the Edeyo Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the future for children in Haiti through education. For more information, visitwww.edeyo.org

The Southampton Town Shelter was about to close its doors in 2010, when a group of local caring citizens stepped in and created the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. There were 225 animals housed at the time and about to be dispersed to other shelters. There would be no place for the homeless strays or lost pets to go. This dedicated group created an award winning shelter and non-profit known nationwide for its innovative programs.

Last night's massive downpours and one of the worst East End traffic tie-ups in recent memory proved no match for the most eagerly anticipated event of the season, the second edition of Art Southampton, presented by Art Miami.

The invitation-only preview reception of the premier contemporary and modern art fair in the Hamptons, benefitting Southampton Hospital, drew thousands of international collectors and art enthusiasts to the massive 100,000-square-foot pavilion Thursday evening.

Dietrich Klinge sculpture on the grounds of f Art Southampton
Upon arriving, guests passed through the sculpture garden designed by LaGuardia Design, featuring works by Albert Paley, Alexandra Arrechea, Dietrich Plain, Robert Lobe, Hal Buckner and more.

Guests enjoyed Perrier-Jouet champagne and hors d’oeuvres by the Southampton Social Club while admiring the stunning display of precious jewels exhibited by sponsor Graff Diamonds. Equally impressive was the intimate outdoor cocktail lounge in which Maserati North America showcased their latest high-caliber automobiles, the Ghibli sports sedan and the all-new full-sized Quattroporte.

Lucky attendees got the first look – and first dibs – on extraordinary artworks from over 90 of the world’s most prestigious galleries. Early reports indicated that sales were more than brisk, and there was serious interest in even one of the priciest works for sale, Roy Lichtenstein’s $19 million Woman with Peanuts.

The New York Academy of Art partnered exclusively with Art Southampton on a special exhibition of works by renowned academy artists, curated by America’s foremost narrative painter and academy senior critic, Eric Fischl, to benefit The Academy’s scholarship fund.

Also of great interest was a showcase of artwork by Ross School students, sales of which will benefit the Chamberlain-Fairweather scholarship fund, and a special reception at the Westwood Gallery booth to honor philanthropist and collector Henry Buhl, founder of ACE (Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless). Highlights of the evening also included painter and performance artist Kevin Berlin staging an eye-catching Alien Invasion, JonOne beginning work on an 8-by-12-foot wall mural, and iconic photographer Jerry Schatzberg revisiting his famous black-and-white photos of The Rolling Stones in drag and Bob Dylan as well as autographing copies of his two books, “Fashion 1950s” and “Paris 1962”.
From the outset, it was abundantly clear to both dealers and attendees that the level of quality of international contemporary art that Art Southampton offers – and in an extraordinarily elegant setting that allows each gallery’s work its own spotlight – was the major draw as word of mouth spread quickly among the Hamptons cognoscenti. Local media was quick to add their praise for the amazing assemblage of works.

Art Southampton will continue through Monday, July 29, with a host of special events, including a special Andy Warhol exhibition and discussion led by his longtime friend Bob Colacello, a young contemporaries afternoon that includes a visit to the private collection of Theodore and Ruth Baum, a VIP interior design brunch, a book signing by famed fashion photographer Raphael Mazzucco, and a cocktail reception hosted by New York Academy of Art President David Kratz and Eric Fischl.

On the evening of July 20th, under the glow of a midsummer’s full moon, East Hampton’s museum, garden, and arts education not-for-profit LongHouse Reserve hosted its annual summer benefit gala, WHITE NIGHT. As anticipated, this year’s event, which was held in honor of internationally acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist and political activist Ai Weiwei, as well as architectural legend Richard Meier and famed patron of the arts, the late Lisa de Kooning, did not fail to entertain. Legendary textile designer and LongHouse Reserve founder Jack Lenor Larsen joined the Reserve’s illustrious Board of Trustees in welcoming artists, patrons, and art-enthusiasts alike to this glamorous garden affair that raised $420,000 for the organization.

WHITE NIGHT was organized by LongHouse Reserve President Dianne Benson, Executive Director Matko Tomicic, Benefit Architect Committee members Preston Phillips and Lee and Jo Ann Skolnick, Board of Trustees including honorary chairs Martha Stewart, Edward Albee, Jeanne and Herbert Siegel, and Louis and Sandy Grotta.
At Saturday evening’s soiree, as guests enjoyed the seductive musical samplings of renowned saxophonist and founding Philip Glass Ensemble member, Dickie Landry, along with those of celebrated Iranian singer/composer, Sussan Deyhim, an impressive showing of artistic elite came to pay tribute to the evening’s distinguished honorees and LongHouse Reserve’s laudable work towards the advancement of art and arts education. Among them were Honoree Richard Meier and his wife Ana Meier, modernist painter Frant Stella, playwright Edward Albee, American artist Alice Aycock, whose latest sculpture was unveiled that night, sculpture artist Jack Youngerman, and avant-garde director and artist Robert Wilson.

Along with the evening’s many artistic treats and temptations, LongHouse Reserve paired a decadent dinner with two exciting auctions: an art-filled silent auction along with a live auction conducted by CK Swett of Paddle 8. Though still unable to leave his country due to the his contentious run-ins with the Chinese Communist Party, honoree Ai Weiwei also greeted gala goers via special video appearance. The critically-acclaimed Elisa Monte and her dance company were also on hand, giving thrilling pop-up performances during an elegant cocktail hour in the gardens.
Gala goers also included president of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, Dorothy Lichenstein, famed lensmen Bill Cunningham, and Patrick McMullan, the late Lisa de Kooning’s daughters Isabelle, Emma and Lucy de Kooning Villeneuve, author and socialite Kelly Killoren Bensimon, Alice Weil Judelson, Fabiola Beracasa and Jason Beckman, Faith Popcorn, Patricia and Geoffrey Schneider, Michael Halsband, the Pucci family including Ralph and Ann, Nicole, Maria and Michael, fashion stylist Yuta Powell, R. Couri Hay, Cynthia Fitzgerald, Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder, Toni Ross and Sara Salaway, Thomas Shulte, Mary Jane Marcasiano and Ralph Gibson, Peter Olsen, Lys Marigold, Skye Marigold, Martin Liu and Abby MacFaeen.

With guests adorned in their most imaginative, iridescent versions and visions of WHITE, the night was a celebration of not only high art and arts patronage but, true to LongHouse’s longstanding mission, of art in all of its living forms.

Bob's Big Bash at Watermill Center

The entrance to Watermill Center's "Devil's Heaven."
Swanning With Adriann: Bob's Big Bash

Have you ever been? Bob Wilson'sWatermill Center celebrated its 20th this past Saturday night, and oh boy, did Bob have a worthy celebration. Despite a rather unpromising start, with a line that wrapped down Watermill Towd Road, with grumpy hedge fund husbands and nervous wives, what was to come made one forget.

"Devil's Heaven" was the theme, and they wasted no time letting you know. There was an impaled, tarred looking fellow hanging inside the first building through which you passed, over challenging pebbles (not so much for my Belgians, but I saw some Blahniks skitter off them. I tried not to laugh).
Once you passed through, you had an option of lying on what looked like a guillotine plank that was raised by a "student" in whose crafty hands you put your well being, as they slowly tipped you back and skyward. And this was before you hit the bar. No thanks.

Other, less artistic, demonic activities ensued, as themed guests tripped and swirled to be captured by the swarms of photographers and the little man in the blue jacket in particular. Some looked familiar, which chagrined me no end, especially with their sad attempt at decorative style, adorned with feathers, horns and swaths of red satin.
But the artistic eccentricity is why we come, and a trip through the forest gave us an even headier dose than expected. We were first greeted by a naked woman in a vat of molasses, with spoons for tasting. I heard a journo actually did. Please tell me you wouldn't have!

Further on there were so many naked, painted "tree nymphs", I lost count. Then there were howling "monks," chair dances, bubble producing dinner guests, and on and on, till one was almost numb with the assault of sounds, bodies, contortions, howling ... kind of like Christmas with Aunt Fizz.
Tree nymphs were everpresent.
And I must say, the guests were a feast to behold, too. Mostly in a good way. Hugh Jackman, I heard was there, though no one I knew saw him, much to the regret of women, men, animals, even inanimate objects. I did see Cindy Sherman, Cecilia Dean, Cameron Silver, Ahn Duong, Stefano Tonchi, Hannah Bronfman, Kenny Scharf, Andrea Glimcher, Annelise Peterson, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lepore, Kyle DeWoody, Eugenio Lopez, Maja Hoffmann, Giancarla Berti, Lewis Cullman and Louise Hirschfeld Cullman, Maria Bacardi, Alexander Gilkes and Misha Nonoo, Todd Bishop, Gabriela Cadena, Selita Ebanks, Gerard Barrett, Lindsey Wixson, Joachim Johnson, Genevieve Jones, Sessa and Richard Johnson, Richard Phillips, Fabiola Beracasa, Paul Sinclair, Sonja Bebber and Martin Brand, Greg Soros, Alexander Soros, Amanda Hearst, Henry Buhl, Harry Brant, Josephine Meckseper, Nicholas Coblence, Farhad Farman-Farmaian, Jill Stuart, Jim Signorelli, Stefano Tonchi, Barbara Goldsmith, Debbie Bancroft, Rick Owens, Sharon Bush, Polina Proshkina, Jane Holzer, Fredric Brandt, Aaron Young, Laure Heriard Dubreuil, Kenny Sharf, Marc Francois Auboire, Eddie Borgo, Keegan Singh, Colby Jordan, Lisa Marie Fernandez, Alison Loehnis, Stacy Engman, Rick Owens, Michele Lamy and many more, undoubtedly some young and chic and upcoming ones that I'd never heard of.

But I have heard of Gaga and though no one knew she was coming, and when she did, POW. It was a rapids full of press, fans, stalkers and many people who temporarily lost all dignity.

She did a forest tour, then joined us in the tent.
Lady Gaga and Marina Abramovic.Robert Wilson with Gaga.
Gaga taking a taste. Abramovic, Wilson, and Gaga.
I have never seen Bob happier. Gaga (Lady, I suppose) on one side, Maren Otto (world class beauty and major art patron), and Marina Abramovic on the other, and Winona Ryder thrown in for fun.

Gag went off to bid what seemed like over $100K on a video portrait and other pieces. She danced and squealed when she won. Bob couldn't have choreographed a more deliriously exciting tribute. She made a toast about Bob being her early inspiration and teaching her to be "ruthless, and true to what you do.and And Alan Cumming offered what sounded like sincere and personal testimony to Bob's influence.

Bob of course made his traditional speech, which is always preceded by a very long two minutes of silence, and a thorough eyeing of his audience. It made me pray I turned my phone off. I was too frozen to look.
Alan Cumming.

Bob Wilson.
I think they made a ton at the Silent Auction and live auctions, but I was losing strength, as dinner was very late, and very modest. Simon de Pury took the mike and continued the auction. (Is it me, or is his voice getting louder and screechier?) I think people bought just to shut him up. But there was always another item. And, when dinner plates were still uncleared, 40 minutes after we finished, we decided to pack up, move on and make a sandwich.

55th Annual Southampton Hospital Gala

Dancing became more expressive as the night moved on at the Southampton Hospital's 55th Annual Gala.
Swanning With Adrian

Yes. I went to the Hospital party-the 55th Annual Southampton Hospital Gala, to be more precise. There is always much moaning and groaning about attending this one — it used to be over 1,000 at a buffet, in a tent on grass, and the formula has always been, buy a dinner ticket, support The Hospital, grab a drink, and run for the hills.

Jean Shafiroff, Bob Chaloner, and Audrey Gruss
This year it was certainly more luxurious. Apparently the ArtHampton fellow agreed to leave his tent on the Elks Club property, for the party. A gracious gesture, indeed, and one that saved them north of $100,000. It was air conditioned, and sleek, though still felt like an art venue, and the waiters clomping across the plywood (though rug covered) floor, shook us up, as if the F train were coursing under us.

The theme, originally Marvelous Madrid, or something, was changed by the Honorary Chair, Audrey Gruss, to ‘Forward the Future’, a very Epcot Center title, if I’ve ever heard one.

Apparently, a ‘blue future memo’ went out, either psychically or truly, as Audrey and the Chair, Jean Shafiroff, wore dazzling aqua numbers-Audrey in an icy satin number, and Jean in what is becoming her iconic Cinderella look, in a massive, ruffled concoction, that had people tripping over her, and of course, cameras popping. Sadly for them, the little man in the blue jacket (that would’ve matched the gals) was in Newport.

After interminable cocktails (6:30-8:00!!!) people milled in to the dinner tent, the buffet making it less urgent to sit. I asked my buffet server if the brown bits in the trough were filet.

“No. Beef.”

“Filet is beef," I gently reminded him. “I say what they tell me," he retorted.
Martin and Audrey GrussJean Shafiroff, Martin Shafiroff, and Elizabeth Shafiroff
Hmm, perhaps I should note who the caterer was. “I’ll have to check," the same server told me. Didn’t he work for them? They all sported blue ties, and the check in girls, blue satin frocks that they got to keep. Red and another shade of blue Plexiglas slabs were suspended from the ceiling and votive candles flickered in plexi-centerpieces. Perhaps a patriotic ‘Future Forward’?

Chuck Scarborough masterfully emceed, though after Hospital President, Bob Chaloner spoke, and it was time for Ms. Shafiroff to speak, interest has waned, and folks seemed to talk right over her. Perhaps she should’ve taken a page from Bob Wilson’s playbook, and gave the group a silent stare for the first 3 minutes.
Dinner under the tent.
Alex Donner entertained ...
Bob was there, probably amused at the contrast to his Watermill event. Victoria Wyman was his date. Others included Hilary Geary Ross and Wilbur Ross, Jamie and Peter Gregory, Gillian Miniter, Dr. John Anton, Somers Farkas (in an unusual leather and muslin dress, that suggested a Mad Max ‘Future’), Robert Zimmerman, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Marianna and George Kauffman, Debbie Bancroft, Christopher Mason, Jean Remmel Little (the first and forever Hospital angel), Lise and Michael Evans, the impossibly beautiful Zoullas clan, B. Michael, Felicia Taylor, Margo and Jimmy Nederlander, Darcy and George Gould, and lots of others, whom, if they ever need, will be grateful that Audrey and Marty Gruss gave $5 million for the Gruss Heart and Stroke Center. The evening raised $1.7 million for the hospital.

Dancing became more expressive as the night moved on, with the nurses and young doctors being the most attractive people out there. We clomped back across the plywood, grabbed our goody bag (goodier than usual, though somewhat incongruously, containing old CD’s of ‘W’ and ‘Star Trek’), and trekked home for a midnight snack of filet. Or beef.

Last Tuesday, The Cinema Society & MCM with Grey Goose hosted a screening of Radius TWC's "Lovelace" at the Museum of Modern Art on 11 West 53rd Street.

For some of us, it was only yesterday. Because for some of us, eyes were opened like never before. It was “Deep Throat,” a porn film made in 1972 for about $25,000 that made an international film star – albeit limited casting-wise – of Linda Susan Boreman using the name Linda Lovelace.

It was possibly the only porn film that had a wide public distribution in theaters across the nation. I don’t think there was ever one before or since. The film grossed possibly $50 million. That’s a half billion in today’s dollars (no matter what they tell you).

It’s the only porn film that drew a huge mixed audience of all ages. Everyone (who had the curiosity) wanted to have a look. Kenny Lane tells the story of going to the movies with Diana Vreeland. One day he asked her if there were anything special she’d like to see. She said, “Yes, I’d like to see that picture about ... the lace ...” He picked up on it right away, “Oh, you mean ‘Deep Throat.’” YES!

Forty years later in a culture drenched in porn that propelled this phenomenon called the Internet, “Deep Throat” sounds like a joke. That was its secret – the title. I never saw it but for many people, again – of all ages and sexual inclinations, it was seminal.

It became the quintessential visual document of what was known worldwide at the time as the Sexual Revolution. Although within a decade that revolutioin was blighted by AIDS, its influence all these years later is now entirely cultural. And this girl, Linda Susan Boreman, child of an abusive marriage, child of hard luck and gritty disappointment, became, in a way, a messenger, looked upon with simple respect. It was all rather amazing.
Amanda Seyfriend, Jack Seyfried, and Ann Seyfried
The Cinema Society evening brought out Sharon Stone (who plays Linda’s mother in the film). Sharon Stone’s forever famous sexual moments on screen are a direct result of that film. Amanda Seyfried plays Linda. Peter Sarsgaard is Chuck Traynor, the husband, and Adam Brody is Harry Reems who plays opposite Linda in “Deep Throat.” Harry Reems was the only famous porn star of that era – when the word was rarely used in speaking but usually found only in print. (Look him up on Wikipedia).

There was a party afterwards at the new Refinery Rooftop on 63 West  38th Street. Most of the cast were there: Amanda Seyfried, Sharon Stone, Peter Sarsgaard, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody. As well as Debi Mazar, Chris Noth, Cory Hardrict, Brian Gattas, directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, writer Andy Bellin, producers Heidi Jo Markel, Laura Rister, Jason Weinberg and Jim Young, RADiUS co-presidents Jason Janego and Tom Quinn.

The noted equestrian community, Millbrook, in the heart of the Hudson Valley, was in full gallop on July 19-21 at the 150-acre farm of Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels. The multi-faceted weekend celebrating its 20th anniversary was centered around three days of horse competition, enhanced by shopping at Fitch's Market with 50 shops, collector cars, along with a series of social events.

The 333 horses in competition for Tiffany & Co. prizes included three Olympic Riders along with over 100 riders who had qualified for the United States Eventing Association's regional championships and of course Millbrook's best were jumping for the blue.

On August 2, 2013, not-for-profit art museum, sculpture garden, and art education organization LongHouse Reserve hosted a spectacular evening of late summer artistic treats and treasures on its sprawling East Hampton property. The Friday evening extravaganza celebrated the opening of two of its much-anticipated 2013 exhibits: internationally acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist and dissident Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold and top emerging Cuban sculptor Yoan Capote’s RERUM ALTER NATURA. The Reserve kicked off these two noteworthy exhibits with an enchanting garden concert by the inventive Voxare Quartet.

As part of the evening’s festivities, Yoan Capote made a special appearance along with LongHouse Founder Jack Lenor Larsen, President Dianne B, Executive Director Matko Tomicic and Peter Olsen.

Friday evening’s festivities included the new exhibit from famed contemporary Chinese artist and political activist Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold. The twelve-piece art installation is the gold patina-plated ‘collector’ series of his internationally touring body of work. A collaborative project between Ai Weiwei, his studio, and private New York art organization AW Asia, the exhibit will reside at LongHouse until October 12th.

The second exhibit is from top Havana sculptor and UNESCO prize-winning artist Yoan Capote. RERUM ALTER NATURA, or The Other Nature of Things, is Capote’s most recent work, completed during his current residency in the states. Like much of Capote’s energetic, psychologically-driven, and superbly well-crafted work, RERUM ALTER NATURA features two bronze sculptures, and grapples with immigration, exile and the emotional and psychological plight of the wandering traveler. The exhibit will also run through the end of the season.

Under the tent at Gardiner Farm, the East Hampton Library held its 9th Annual Author's Night.

Beginning in 2005 with a handful of dinners and a few hundred attendees, Authors Night has grown to be the premier literary event in the Hamptons with over 125 authors and more than 1,000 people in attendance.
The evening's Founding Co-Chairs Alec Baldwin and Barbara Goldsmith were joined by Honorary Co-Chairs, authors Robert A. Caro, Nelson DeMille, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The evening began under the tent where guests mingled and met the authors, and were able to buy their books and have them inscribed. From there, the evening continues as some of the authors discuss their most recent book at dinner parties held in private homes throughout the Hamptons.

Caramoor, the country estate of Walter and Lucie Rosen, was where they built their home and filled it with treasures.  Enjoying the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor with its art collection, gardens, and musical programs, in 1946 the Rosens established a public trust to open Caramoor to the community. Their musical evenings were the inspiration for the Caramoor International Music Festival, now in its 68th year, and the ongoing Music in the Rosen House series.

Since its founding, Caramoor has gained international renown as a cultural institution, presenting music of all types and inspiring artists and audiences alike.

Swanning With Adrian

This is the time of summer that reminds us of why we are out here. The weather has been perfect-brassy, beautiful, sunny days, and cool, sparkling eves. The tomatoes are fire engine red, the corn pearly and popping with sugar, and the obligatory, behemoth events are over.

This not to say it is quiet. Lord no. I think I tallied 6 cocktail invites, 3 dinners, 2 screenings, 2 tournaments and a partridge in a ... and I’m not what you’d call very popular. Saturday I hauled myself over to East Hampton to see John Heminway and his extraordinary documentary “Battle for the Elephants.”

I’d actually seen it before, and know only too well, the story of the decimation of these noble creatures because of ivory poaching. But I wanted to support John’s work. Donna Karan hosted and it looked like a solid turnout.

There was a screening of “The Butler” in East Hampton the night before. I couldn’t make it out of the city in time, though I heard it was moving, if a tad manipulative. Jon Bon Jovi and Mercedes Ruehl approved.

Back to Sat: I tumbled through a chic, arty party at The Parrish Art Museum. One can rent the place out, apparently, and many are. Herzog de Meuron and Art of Eating make a nice package.

Next, we moved over to The 17th Annual Loves Heals party to benefit The Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education.Alison Gertz was an AIDS activist who contracted AIDS from a bartender at Studio 54 when she was 16, after only one, fateful encounter.

After she died, her best pals, including Dini von Mueffling vowed to continue her work, and Love Heals was born. The party was a celebration, however, especially when Dini announced that they had passed the 600,000 mark of teenagers educated by Love Heals. The theme, “Let’s Misbehave” (safely) saluted the Gatsby era. Carol Gertz (Allison’s Mom) wore her grandmother’s flapper dress, beautifully.  Her 101-year-old mother spent the day stitching beads back on it. I can’t even thread a needle and I’m half her age.

Nicole Trunfio slithered in a black fringe number, and Co-Chair Bibhu Mohapatra dressed Chairs Dini, Gigi Stone and Alina Cho in his fabulous frocks. Marla Maples (who is more beautiful than ever) was there with her daughter Tiffany Trump. They’re moving back East because Tiffany’s at U of P.

Newscaster Chris Wragge (I like him because he does shout outs for animals) was dapper in a white Gatsby-esque jacket. Arden Wohl was edgy and glam as always. Kelly Bensimon was there with her daughter Sea. Eric Villency was with some new, pretty girlfriend, and all of this against the backdrop of Wolffer vineyard’s rows of grape vines — quite something to behold.
Guests at the Wolffer estate.

Though it was sold out, it was a cozy crowd of 200. They raised over $195,000. Joey Wolffer (the late, beloved Christian’s enterprising daughter) raised some money herself, out of her strategically parked ‘boutique truck’-impossible to miss on your way in, or out. We were presented with snappy little goody bags, and were actually thanked as we left — a nice touch that very few charities ever do.

And then — by now it was 10:30 — we headed over to Vito Schnabel’s‘Small Summer Party’, given with three of his pals at their fab rental house on the ocean in Southampton. A select few from Love Heals trotted ahead of us (slinking Nicole and sultry Arden — quelle surprise — and down the long staircase to the beach party below.

Vito Schnabel with mom Jacqueline.
Hundreds of little lights twinkled above, and big Bean baggy chairs surrounded the dance floor. Three bars quenched the mostly young, and uber glam crowd and an army of servers passed mac-and-cheese bites, and mini-burgers to the crowd, made ravenous by fervent dancing to the best DJ I have heard this summer.

I was very impressed by what a flawless evening these four young men threw — though Vito is certainly more sophisticated than your average bear. His beautiful Mom, Jacqueline curled up on a cushion with her beau, Alain. Amanda Hearst and Nicky Hilton circulated through the sea of impossibly, effortless chic revelers which included Tall Bruce, the literally tall and lanky member of the art collective, The High Quality Foundation, that Vito supports. He was a most expressive dancer and inspired many of us to let loose, a little more loosely. And then, suddenly it was 2:00, and I had tennis, church and a trip back to Gotham ahead. Oh well, just one more.

Not Just Any Game

The "Writers" at The East Hampton Artists Writers Annual Softball Game.
It’s not just any old softball game. Its roster of former participants is quirky yet impressive: former President Bill Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, George Plimpton, Alec Baldwin, Roy Scheider, Paul Simon, Christie Brinkley, Jackson Pollock, Mort Zuckerman, and Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few.

The East Hampton Artists Writers Annual Softball Game started around 1948, when some local East Hampton artists organized a casual pickup game on a summer afternoon. Today, it celebrates its 65th anniversary and has become one of the premier summer events in the Hamptons.
The Artists
Writers huddle
This year's game drew thousands to watch writers such as Carl Bernstein, Jay McInerny, Mort Zuckerman, Walter Isaacson, and Mike Lupica play artists including Ed Hollander, Eric Ernst and actors Josh Charles, Lori Singer and othersUmpiring this year was Today Show host Matt Lauer and New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. And making an appearance for the second year in a row was former President Bill Clinton.
Caution: Press Check-In
With the support of corporate sponsors and deep-pocketed donors, the game is expected to raise $100,000 for Phoenix House, East End Hospice, East Hampton Day Care, and The Retreat.

Author, Ken Auletta, the longtime captain of the writer's team stated: "We mock how the other side cheats. We act like winning is all that matters. Winning does matter. But so does the camaraderie forged over many games and many after-game beers."

Information about the game and the charities benefitting can be found at artistswritersgame.org

On Saturday, August 3, 2013,  A Summer Venetian Masked Ball presented by the Preservation Society of Newport County of Rhode Island, took place at The Elms in Newport, Rhode Island.

Guests wearing creative masks of all styles arrived for the Venetian Masked Ball at the Elms front entrance. They were greeted by the Living Statues of Rhode Island costumed in Venetian style clothing. They proceeded to an elegant champagne reception held in the entrance foyer, dining room and terraces to the gardens below. Dinner was served in an elaborately decorated tented enclosure and dessert and dancing followed. The black-tie event drew almost 600 guests.

Living Statues dressed as Venetian Courtiers
The Venetian Masked Ball celebrated the return of the largest complete set of 18th century Venetian paintings in America to their original home at the Elms. Fifty years ago the paintings were auctioned off as the house was being prepared for demolition. The collection consisted of ten paintings. The four largest paintings, two in the entrance foyer and two in the dining room, remained at The Elms after the 1962 auction of its collections. Six smaller canvases were sold. In 2004.

The Preservation Society raised the funds needed to purchase four of the six paintings and recently a new round of negotiations with funds donated by Preservation Society supporters, succeeded in setting a favorable price for the other two. The Preservation Society of Newport County purchased The Elms in 1962 and opened the house to the public. In 1996 The Elms was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Earlier this summer, Mark F. Gilbertson hosted Monmouth County Historical Association's Garden Party Kick-Off at his home in Rumson.  Over 100 guests gathered on a beautiful night in anticipation of the 38th Annual Garden Party which was held a few weeks later at the home of Mrs. Kevork Hovnanian. Over $98,000 was raised to support the work of the Association to preserve and protect Monmouth County's history.

Monmouth County Historical Association collects, preserves, and interprets its extensive museum, library, and archival collections that relate to Monmouth County's history and culture and makes these resources available to the widest possible audience. The Association promotes the study and appreciation of regional and national history through educational programming, publications, special exhibits, and research services. The Association also preserves and interprets five significant historic sites which represent the County's vanishing architectural heritage.

A record-breaking 1,700 people attended a performance by Jennifer Hudson at UJA-Federation of New York's 23rd Annual Summerfest Concert on Wednesday, August 7, 2013. The concert was held at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, Westbury, NY.

The event, offered through UJA-Federation's new Leadership Campaign, recognized Scott Lawrence Smith, of Roslyn Heights, NY, with the prestigious Robert S. Boas Award for his philanthropic and community leadership.

The evening began with an elaborate buffet and cocktails under a beautiful tent. Guests then found their seats in the theatre where a program introduced them to the work of UJA-Federation. Jennifer Hudson took the stage at 9:30 where she brought the crowd to its feet. Towards the end of her 60 minute concert, she came down into the crowd to dance with Summerfest guests.

Hamilton Reece and daughter, the Baum family, and Richard and Lisa Perry at The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's second annual “Hamptons Paddle & Party for Pink."
Meanwhile, summer reading aside, was out East in the land of the salt and the sand and the hedge fund heroes, Adriann Swann was swanning about for the NYSD. He reports:

I find myself cursing at out-of-town license plates. The traffic is the worst I have ever seen it out here. Even the back roads are at a standstill. What accounts for this? Is there more money around, thus more Hamptonites, or less, thus fewer overseas vacations? Damned if I know, but damned if I want to leave my porch anymore. If I had a putting green, I might not. But then again, if I did, I wouldn’t have Bill Clinton lounging on my chaise or Carl Bernstein schvitzing as he ran bases.
Danger: Press Check-In for the 65th Annual Artists vs. Writers Softball Game.
Maybe that would be a good thing, but nevertheless, I trekked to Herrick Park in Easthampton for the 65th Annual Artists vs. Writers Softball Game. I actually tried to sign up. Unfortunately, they are long ‘writers’, and my very part-time avocation didn’t sway them.

Had I a paintbrush, things might’ve been different. Apparently, since Jackson Pollack and Willem deKooning started this tradition with their pick up games, the artist’s team has thinned. Skywriters and auto body painters were recruited as ‘artists’ along side John Alexander and Eric Fischl. But this year, filmmaker Jamie Patricoff (son of Alan), won MVP and swung the pendulum back to the artists, 8-6. Ray Kelly and Matt Lauer umped, Lori Singer wore the uniform best, a ‘sit down’ with Mort Zuckerman was auctioned off (maybe to a single lady?), Ken Auletta managed his team, including his stalwart, Jay McInerney, and everyone left, a little dusty, some a little defeated, but happy they raised over $100,000 for several worthwhile East End organizations. Maybe next year I’ll put my porch staining on my c.v.

I fought the traffic west again, only to rinse and turn right around to the east, for The First Annual Bow Wow Meow Party at The (and for The) ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott. ARF, stands for Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, and they do that for over 1,000 animals every year. They also have a 4 star rating on Charity Navigator — impressive and something we should all check for on our own not-for-profits.

Lisa McCarthy, President of ARF, warmly welcomed the 400 animal lovers, and turned the MC-ing over to Dick Cavett, who last year, adopted his pup, Riley here.
Sara Davison, Dick Cavett, Bernadette Peters, and Beth Ostrosky Stern.
When he announced it was time for the ‘Adoptive Animal Parade’ to begin, I silently groaned and moved my hand over my dates. White wine and animal worship are a dangerous combo when 30 great little creatures stream past you with ‘Take me Home’ streaming from their eyes, and a mere raise of one’s own paw will unite you. She has three dogs, a curmudgeonly cat, and a pair of lovebirds already.

Two did get adopted, by people who proved they could provide a good home, and were sober. Beth Ostrosky Stern, a fervent animal protector, took the stage and explained Howard couldn’t be there because he was kitten sitting with the eight they were foster parents for. This is a crowd where having only one pet makes one feel like poacher.
Bernadette Peters with a couple of beauties.
Beth, flanked by two magnificent bulldogs from a puppy mill, presented the Animal Champion Award to Bernadette Peters whose Broadway Barks benefits 30 animal organizations, including ARF. She visited ARF and its inhabitants earlier that day. Christopher Mason proved his animal love by running the auction, while his best friend, Ivana Lowell, was toasting her brother Jonathan Moffat’s wedding at a fete back in Southampton.

Also, on Saturday, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) hosted its second annual “Hamptons Paddle & Party for Pink,” raising $1.2 million for research aimed at prevention and a cure for breast cancer. The two-part fundraiser began with an official World Paddle Association stand-up paddle board race in Sag Harbor, followed by a Sunset Party at the waterfront estate of prominent New Yorkers Lisa and Richard Perry. For the second consecutive year, the Perry’s joined Hamptons residents Maria and Larry Baum as event co-chairs, with special guests, legendary surfer Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabrielle Reece, former professional volleyball player, fashion model and author.

Roughly 150 paddle boarders, including award-winning actress Edie Falco, Maria Baum and Richard Perry, raced alongside Hamilton at Sag Harbor’s Havens Beach. Baum, co-owner of Hamptons restaurant Tutto Il Giorno and founder of the event, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. She credits paddle boarding with enabling her to cope through her diagnosis, treatment and subsequent recovery. Onlookers included family and friends of the paddlers, as well as BCRF supporters Carolyn Murphy, CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin, and Hamilton’s wife, Reece.

Taking part in today’s race means a lot to so many people,” said Hamilton, the founder of stand-up paddle boarding. “I think everyone indirectly or directly is affected by breast cancer, or other forms of cancer, and I’m here to support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This was an incredible event. Everyone had a great time.”

This past Saturday they held the 18th annualArthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the US Open. It was the unofficial kickoff of the 2013 US Open tennis tournament and they were visited by guest speaker, the First Lady Michelle Obama, who was there to promote her “Let’s Move” campaign.

Mrs. Obama told the guests that she urged her own daughters to get active in tennis so they wouldn’t have the struggle at the game that she has had as an adult. She congratulated the US Tennis Association’s initiative to install five thousand new kid-sized tennis courts across the country and to train 15,000 new coaches, trainers and teachers over a three year period beginning next year.

Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign was created to get kids more active and eating healthy meals.

On Thursday, August 22, the elegant Parisian pop-up picnic, Dîner en Blanc, Philadelphia took place for a second year. John F. Kennedy Boulevard, approaching 30th Street Station, was this year's 'secret' space. Culinary and culture enthusiasts dressed in white converged upon a secret locale for an unforgettable evening of elegance, beauty and magic. Attendees came prepared with tables, chairs, non-disposable supplies, food, wine and floral arrangements. Evening festivities included napkin waving, sparkler lighting, live music, dinner, and dancing. More than 2,000 people participated in this year's feast.
The "dinner in white," which began humbly in 1988, is now attended by thousands at some of the best-known Parisian spaces. That year, François Pasquier returned to Paris after a few years abroad and held a dinner party to reconnect with friends. So many wanted to come that he asked them to convene at the Bois de Boulogne and to dress in white, so they could find each other!

Swanning With Adrian

Did I say things we were winding down? I must have been deluded. Last weekend in the Hamptons was the perfect storm of politics, money, power, entertainment, and a little sentimentality thrown in to remind us we are actually human.

As you may have heard, Hill and Bill are churning up the potato patches in Sagaponack. They took this opportunity to raise a few rubles for his Bill, Hilary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, which may or may not be part of The Clinton Global Initiative. I’ve lost track of his gazillions.
Bill and Hillary 's home in Sagaponack for the summer (owned by Republican donor Michael Saperstein).
Ron Perelman (the busiest boy — more to come), and Mort Zuckerman, among others, threw a do at Topping Rose, the restaurant that was already white hot and impossible to get in to. Thanks, Bill. The big Dems were all there: Alan and Susan Patricof, Marc Lasry, Robert Zimmerman, Joel Klein, Ann Tenenbaum, Michael Kempner, Donna Karan, Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Liz Robbins and Doug Johnson who feted the Clintons the night before. Infinite feting here. Not a word mentioned about Hillary’s possible run. All in good time.
Clockwise from top left: Ron Perelman; Alan and Susan Patricof; Joel Klein; Mort Zuckerman; Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel; Ann Tenenbaum.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, cleverly tacked on a fundraiser while the funds were flowing, and had his own shindig Sunday night with Jon Bon Jovi entertaining. I wondered if Sandra Lee made the lasagna, with ketchup. Not if Matilda was in the house.

Earlier that Friday, Eric Schmidt was given a book party in Southampton, sans Google glasses, so nary a report. Birthdays were also celebrated. Ben Bradlee’s 92nd was toasted by Barbara Walters, Carl Bernstein, Charlie Rose and a few other real journos, and real friends. Gigi and Avie Mortimer celebrated their anniversary, too. Kathy and Rick Hilton had their annual dinner. They are rumored to be the consummate hosts, and I heard the Glorious Food menu was the best of the summer.
Barbara Walters and the birthday boy Ben Bradlee with friends Mort Janklow, Linda Janklow, Candice Bergen, and Marshall Rose.
I have no complaints, though, as I suspect I went to the party of the summer. Ron Perelman opened the gates (literally, though only if they had your name), for the 3rd summer to benefit The Apollo Theater. Someone is doing something right in that development office. Paul Tudor Jones has just joined the board, and the cumulative force was palpable. Marcus Samuelson cooked, Questlove spinned. Roots was the ‘house band’, and that’s just for starters. Jamie Fox and Pharrell Williams were joined by Colin Powell on stage for the chorus of  “Get Lucky.” This was after they sang "Blurred Lines” — the song of the summer and the biggest generation uniter, moving moguls like Henry Kravis, Ron Lauder, Dick Parsons (the most easily moved, despite his size).

Katie Holmes
seemed to lose her last vestiges of imprisonment and jived her way onstage, joined by Ellen DeGeneres. Mary Kate Olsen snuggled on Oliver Sarkozy’s lap. Ciara sang, followed by the energetic Bon Jovi and Darlene Love. Lenny Kravitz belted “American Woman,” and the American women swooned.  Billy Joel and Mary J. Blige didn’t sing, but didn’t have to. Angelica Houston mingled with Harvey Weinstein and Don Johnson. They raised over $3 million, and in my book, they earned every penny.

By the end of the show, guests were ready to groove and took to the dance floor for the sock hop portion of the night, revisiting popular 1950's dances such as the Hand Jive, Lindy Bob, Cha-Cha and Swing.

The Rydell High School Sock Hop benefitting the Prostate Cancer Foundation was planned in association with the Charles Evans Prostate Cancer Foundation Pro-Am Tennis Tournament, which took place during the same weekend, Friday, August 23, 2013 – Sunday, August 25, 2013.

RxArt, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving pediatric hospital environments through art, hosted an evening of sunset cocktails at The Bridge Golf Course in Bridgehampton. The cocktail party served as a pre-cursor to the organization’s annual benefit event, the RxArt 13th Anniversary Party, which will take place in September 2013.

Since its founding in 2000 by Diane Brown, RxArt has steadily aimed to improve pediatric hospitals by transforming the intimidating environments into comforting, engaging spaces. Using site-specific contemporary art as its platform, RxArt provides patients and their families the opportunity to escape the stresses and pains of illness and instead offers a sense of hope.
RxArt President and Founder Diane Brown was joined by many supporters, including Work of Art star and RxArt Board Member Bill Powers; BRAVO TV’s Trez Thomas; author and “The Style Guy” of GQ Glenn O’Brien;artists Peter Dayton, Enoc Perez, and Aaron Young; fashion designers Rachel Fleit and Tanya Taylor; photographers Philippe Cheng,Jack Pierson and Bastienne Schmidt; interior designer John Bjornen; bridal and fashion designer Gregory Nato; and former RxArt Board Member Regina Feuer and husband Brian Feuer.

The ubiquitous, legendary photographer of the New York social scene of the last 40 years, Patrick McMullan, celebrated his birthday Tuesday night at the Magnises Penthouse and Roof Garden on 132 Wooster Street. It was by invitation only (the only way to corral the crowds of Patrick's friends) and DJ Huda delivered the music and the birthday boy, who's just a few years beyond forty. The Party, which began at nine, could have run forever, but Patrick's nightlife with the lens will anyway.

Last Friday night at Ann Madonia Antiques on 36 Jobs Lane in Southampton, they held a cocktail reception and booksigning for authors Gary Lawrance and Anne Surchin and their newly revised edition of Houses of the Hamptons, 1880 – 1930 (Acanthus Press).

Click to orderHouses of the Hamptons.
Each of the thirty-four properties included are illustrated with extensive current as well as archival photographs, along with their histories and their architectural layouts.

This is a beautiful book with 334 pages, illustrated with both black and white and color photographs of some of the greatest houses of the Hamptons built in the half century ending in 1930.

Many of the great houses are gone, demolished by people who only wanted the land for some other projects (like breaking up the acreage and selling off the lots) or architectural choices, such as more contemporary styles.

However, many remain including “Westerly” which is now the summer home of Tory Burch, and “Ballyshear” which was purchased by Mayor Bloomberg last year for $20 million, “Old Trees” on Lake Agawam in Southampton which now belongs to hedge fund owner John Paulson. One of the greatest houses, built in 1929 by Henry Francis DuPont on the beach on Meadow Lane, is no longer extant. Sold after Mr. DuPont's death, the house went through several changes including a ludicrous architectural venture by one erstwhile tycoon-of-the-moment, Barry Trupin in the 1970s to a final sale (for $21 million) to Calvin Klein who had the entire house demolished, after which he built a modern two-story glass and steel house which was featured in last weekend’s New York Times.

Chiu-Ti Jansen at the China Beauty Charity Fund's inaugural China Fashion Night Gala at the Pierre Hotel.
This past Friday night, the China Beauty Charity Fund ("CBCF") celebrated its inaugural China Fashion Night Gala at the Pierre Hotel. Hosted by CBCF Founder and Chairwoman, Yue-Sai Kan, with actor Archie Kao and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo as Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, the gala benefitted the CBCF Scholarship at the Fashion Institute of Technology ("FIT").

The highlight of the gala was the fashion presentation and runway show by China's preeminent haute couture designer, Guo Pei, whose exquisite creations were showcased for the very first time in the US. Guo presented acclaimed pieces from her "Legend of the Dragon" collection, including a gown inspired by stained glass domes of European churches and a gown adorned with several thousand "Gong Hua," silk flowers made exclusively for the royal palace and were rescued from the storage room of a deserted factory and carefully restored with steam – which took nearly 50,000 hours.

CBCF's mission is to improve the lives of women and children through sustainable economic growth; it aims to foster international understanding through cultural and academic exchanges by providing grants to empower Chinese women to achieve equality, autonomy and to fulfill their potential. Accordingly, the Gala will benefit CBCF's Scholarship Fund at the Fashion Institute of Technology ("FIT") to afford talented creatives from China the opportunity to study at FIT in NYC. The scholarship is further supported by Fashion 4 Development's ("F4D") internship program which will place graduates with global brands and give them access to angel investments to start their own businesses.

City Parks Foundation's annual CityParks Tennis Benefit, co-chaired by Billie Jean King and John McEnroe, was held on Tuesday, August 27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The event, which welcomed 250 guests, raised over $200,000 for CityParks Tennis, a free youth instructional program that serves over 7,000 children in parks throughout New York City each season.
Alison Tocci, Billie Jean King, Daniel Corona, and David Moore
Ken Solomon, Chairman and CEO Tennis Channel, and Junior Honoree Daniel Corona
Held each year at the US Open Tennis Championships, the event, hosted by Budd Mishkin, features a cocktail party, dinner, silent and lives auction, and tickets to the Open session matches in Arthur Ashe Stadium. This year, City Parks Foundation honored Eric Fromm, a native New Yorker and the former #38 tennis player in the world with the 2013 Vitas Gerulaitis Community Service Award. Fromm currently serves as the Managing Director for SPORTIME, which runs 144 state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

The event also honored CityParks Tennis youth player, 14-year-old Daniel Corona, with the Billie Jean King Junior Award. Daniel, of Fresh Meadows, began playing tennis with the program at Cunningham Park, before he earned a spot in the Chase Aces year-round intermediate level program and this past summer landed himself in the City Parks Foundation Junior Academy presented by LACOSTE, an annual tournament-training program for experienced players held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Alison Tocci, David Moore, and Virginia Wade
CityParks Tennis, one of the largest municipal tennis programs in the country, provides free tennis lessons and activities at 40 parks citywide to children ages 6-16. CityParks Tennis also features an advanced training academy, which offers talented youth with financial need the opportunity to bring their game to a higher level of competition. Hundreds of academy graduates have earned college athletic scholarships and sectional and national rankings. Two graduates of the academy have played in the junior division at the US Open.

City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the only independent, nonprofit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. They work in over 750 parks citywide, presenting a broad range of free arts, sports, and education programs, and empowering citizens to support their parks on a local level. Its programs and community building initiatives reach more than 600,000 people each year, contributing to the revitalization of neighborhoods throughout New York City.
